AB OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that level of knowledge among students
in city schools will be higher than that of those in the peripheral
areas while the change effected after AIDS education programme will be
higher among students of the latter group. METHODS: Groups of students
from randomly selected schools of both categories were assessed to
obtain base line data by means of a close ended questionnaire, following
which an awareness programme was conducted based on DESH's IEC module.
Efforts were made to maximise participatory interaction by using
non-didactic teaching methods like role plays, skits, brain storming
session and focus group discussion. Students were asked to answer
post-test questionnaire. RESULTS: The impact of the program was studied
and the findings are presented in the table below: TABULAR DATA, SEE
ABSTRACT VOLUME. DISCUSSION/CONCLUSIONS: The study shows that the
effective change is high in the information/awareness and collective
action concepts but not, in terms of empowerment particularly in
peripheral schools. Hence we need to strengthen the students' life
skills like decision-making saying No overcoming peer pressure to
prevent them from adopting high risk life style and to bring about an
attitudinal change.
